Son of William Henry and Caroline (nee Wearren) Smith. Siblings were Joseph William Smith and Jennie Smith Reiss. According to his obituary, Johnny was a native of Ohio. He was born deaf and orphaned at an early age. He had to leave school and go to work to support himself as a printer's helper at the age of 9 years. He worked as a printer in Tennessee and Kentucky before coming to Houston, Texas in 1909. He was a printer for the Houston Chronicle for 51 years before his retirement. Johnny Smith passed away in Dallas in a nursing home. He was survived by his wife, Ivy M. Smith, daughter Mrs. Evelyn Williams, and son, John Forrest Smith of Dallas.
