David E. Califf was born in Smithfield, Bradford Co., Penn., in 1825. After living in several places, he came in 1858 to what is now Muskegon County. Michigan. In 1844 he married Miss Harriet Knickerbocker, of Smithfield, Penn., by whom he had nine children, seven of whom lived to be men and women. He took a homestead in section 13 of Fruitland. When the war broke out he sent two of his sons to do battle for the right. He has held office as Justice or Collector for several years. After enduring the hardships of clearing up the forest, he has secured a good home and every comfort. He follows fruit growing with great success.

DAVID E. CALIFF, OLD RESIDENT OF FRUITLAND, DIES.
David E. Califf, a resident of Fruitland township for more than forty years, died at his home yesterday after an illness of a week with the grip. He was born in Bradford County, Pa., in 1825, and in 1858 came to Michigan. A year later he settled on a farm in Fruitland and had lived there ever since. In 1858 he and Miss Harriet Knickerbocker were married. Fourteen years ago Mrs. Califf died in Fruitland. Mr. Califf leaves three children: Mrs. Emma K. Jenkins, 22 Giddings street; Ernest R. Califf, Fruitland, and Frank Califf, Rudolph, La. He also leaves the following grandchildren in Muskegon: David, Claude, and John Jenkins, and Elmer and Nellie Califf. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Gordon schoolhouse in Fruitland. Rev. W. I. Cogshall, of the Central M. E. church, will conduct the service.

The funeral of C. E. Califf occurred Sunday from the Califf farm in Fruitland. Mr. Califf died Friday night aged 55 years. He was a well-known farmer and has held several offices of trust in his township.
