Calvin Metcalf, 90, of Valdese, died Friday May 1, 2015. Born September 8, 1924 in Asheville he was the son of Joseph Edward and Vera Mae Metcalf. He grew up in West Asheville and the Avery's Creek community of Henderson County.

In additon to his parents, his beloved wife Ruth and daughter Dianne Owen preceded him in death. Also his son-in-law John T. Lowman, brothers Hoy and Harvey Metcalf, a sister Ruby Riggins, and a younger sister Katherine preceded him in death.

He is survived by his brothers, Joe Metcalf of Glen Alpine; Carl Metcalf and wife Paula of Valdese; and a sister Marchalle Speas and husband Herb of Morganton. Surviving also are his daughters, Katherine Lowman and Ken Nye of Raleigh, NC, Norma Jean & Lonnie Conner of Raleigh; and Christie Metcalf of Durham, NC. Five grandchildren, Karen Lowman of Raleigh, NC, Paul and Hope Weir, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Kevin and Devon Conner of Cary, NC, Hayley and Parker Bigelow of Durham, NC, all calling Calvin their "Papaw".

Calvin served in World War II as a staff sergeant of the 522nd Combat Engineering Co. He spent time in Italy building bridges during the war. Being a fine woodwork craftsman led him into the construction and house building business for over 50 years in Valdese and surrounding areas. He loved books and was an avid reader. He visited the Valdese library in his later years. Calvin's sport of choice was golf and attended various tournaments, still playing as a senior citizen. He was a member of the Valdese First Baptist Church and American Legion Post 234. Calvin moved in 2011 to Raleigh, NC to be closer to his children and grandchildren. During that time he got the opportunity to fly to Washington DC with other World War II Veterans on the Triangle Flight of Honor to visit the national memorial built in their honor. He remarked it was a highlight in his life, and would mark it off his "bucket list". He resided at Abbotswood at Stonehenge senior citizen retirement village where he enjoyed numerous friends and lots of activities, still keeping his golf putting skills in tack.

The family extends its appreciation for the wonderfully compassionate care from the staffs of Abbotswood and for the friendship and kindness from the resident community members. Also the family would like to thank Doctors Making House Calls, Retirement Home Care, Transitions Hospice Care, and Elmcroft of Northridge for their assistance Care and support.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday May 5, 2015 at Burke Memorial Park.
