Betty Jane Acord

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Betty Jane Acord passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at the age of 85, due to congestive heart failure at her son and daughter-in-law's home in Jacksonville, Fla.

Betty was born March 1, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, but later in life became a long-term resident of Belington, W.Va., where she worked and raised a family with her husband, William Chilton Acord.

She had four children, William D., Sandra R., Mary K., and Michael J. She also had 10 grandchildren, Ray G., Nicky P., Kimberly P., Rebecca S., Becky B., Mark A., Julie C., Bub A., Glenda A., and Jessica R. As well as 11 great-grandchildren, Logan B., Ian P., Christian S., Danielle S., Amanda G., Jordan P., Luke P., G. Bartelli, Nathaniel G., Mark A. Jr., and William Trenton A. Her youngest son, Michael, became her caretaker as her health began to fail. He spent many months assisting her with getting out of debt at her home in West Virginia before the move to Florida.

Betty enjoyed many activities from watching old western movies, gambling, playing Bingo, sewing, fishing, and squirrel hunting. It was on a squirrel hunting trip in 1976 that she lost her husband at the age of 57 due to a massive heart attack. While living in Florida she enjoyed a visit from her granddaughter, Jessica, whom she had not seen in many years, and her wife, Heavenly, who live in San Antonio, Texas. This time together meant so much to Jessica, as well as to Betty. With such distance between them this was a wonderful opportunity to make up for lost time and learn more about one another. With this being the first time that Betty and Heavenly met, the two of them hit it off like children on a school yard playground. Reminiscing of old memories from Betty's own childhood and schoolgirl days all the way up to the present, sharing many stories and strolls down memory lane. They all enjoyed many laughs over meals, outings by the pool, even a good old-fashioned card game among three generations of our family, and not to mention sharing a few ice cold beers. Now we are left with great memories of an even greater woman that not even the sands of time can erase. We will always love you. Her final resting place was dug and prepared by her son, Michael, at the family cemetery in Saxon, W.Va., where she has been laid to rest next to her husband. Her son and daughter-in-law, Cheryl, have planted two snow white Hibiscus flowers one by each gravestone, marking the beauty of our memories that will forever live on as she is dancing in heaven with her son, my uncle, Bob, who was waiting with open arms to welcome her home. If you are a loved one of Betty and truly love her in your heart, watch for your mailman. Written by Jessica L. Reyes.
