Clyde Murrell Ward, 75, of Amarillo died Sunday, June 11, 2006

Clyde Murrell Ward was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Sudan to John and Jessie Bilderback Ward. He grew up on the family farms in Sudan and Littlefield. Later his family moved to Melrose, N.M. During his very early years, it became necessary for Clyde to work to help support his family during the Depression.

He married Phyllis Joanne Curl on Jan. 12, 1950, in Las Lunas, N.M.

Clyde was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and served with valor as a medic and combat soldier. Due to his experience as a medic, Clyde was required to stay in Korea until after the armistice was signed. He then returned to Albuquerque, N.M., where he was self-employed as a master carpenter and general contractor working on commercial multi-story buildings and government installations in Albuquerque and Los Alamos, N.M.

It was during his years in Los Alamos that he met President John F. Kennedy as he inspected a military site in which Clyde had been job superintendent. In later years, he moved his family to Ruidoso, N.M., in order to be closer to his parents.

In 1975, he moved to Amarillo. He retired as a journeyman carpenter from Western Builders after a number of years service as a master carpenter. He enjoyed and loved to spend time with his family, tinker on his numerous "projects," hunt for deer and play dominoes. He looked forward to attending church services several times a week. Clyde was a man of honor, courage, integrity, faith and character who survived great hardships and continued to love well and deeply. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 20, 2000; his parents; and four brothers, Raymond Ward, Melvin Ward, Tom Ward and Bill Ward.

Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Lynne Dean and husband Bob, Mary Jeannette Evans and husband Ricky and Wanda Lee Akens and husband Craig, all of Amarillo; three brothers, Lee Henry Ward of Ruidoso, Jim Ivan Ward of Mayhill, N.M., and Will Dan Ward of Las Cruces, N.M.; two sisters, Jessie Fay Stoner of Lampasas and Nancy Rose Beggs of Pep, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Reina Laura Dean of Barre, Vt., Robert Lee Dean Jr., Amy Nichole Ayars-Evans, Amber Rachel Evans, C.J. Lewis Evans, Angel Joanne Irene Evans and Lacey Paige Akens, all of Amarillo; and three great-grandchildren, Kurstie Danae Phillips, Samantha Lynn Dean and Trinity Cheyenne "Turtle" Evans.
