"IT WAS A SATURDAY"
BLAIR, AREA HAD THEIR SHARE OF FLOODS, TOO

By Mrs. Oscar Haugen, La Crosse Tribune Correspondent

On March 13, 1916, Magnus Stenberg and Ole and Maddie Buxrud, 12, drowned while returning home from a Sunday visit when the horses and wagon slipped off a bridge into the swollen stream.
The driver, Oscar Stenberg, lives here. Magnus, who was nearby, plunged into the stream to save the twins and all three were drawn under the bridge and drowned.

*****

Other details: Oscar was Magnus' brother and the twins were relatives on Oscar's wife's side of the family. Magnus was 44 at the time. 5 other people were able to escape from the wagon unharmed. Oscar was familiar with the bridge and thought he would be able to navigate it safely even through water was running over it. He drove too close to the edge and the wagon turned over.
