At an early age, William Goodwyn confessed his faith and accepted Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as his Lord and Savior. He united with Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA where he was a faithful member. His Christian life is evident as he belonged and served in various organizations.
At Zion Baptist Church, William was recognized as Father of the Year in 1992, for loyal service and contribution to Zion Baptist by the Pulpit Aid Society, and as a Sparkling Diamond. William was also a Boys Scout Leader, Parliamentarian Elect of the Singles Ministry, initiated the organization of the Joint Ushers Ministry, and attended the Baptist General Convention Annual Sessions on numerous occasions. He was also a devoted member of the Giles B. Evans Memorial Club. His fraternal affiliation was with Mount Nebo 43rd Masonic Lodge as a 32nd Degree Mason. He was recognized by Mount Nebo for outstanding dedication.
William Goodwyn was educated in the Petersburg Public Schools and attended Virginia Normal Institute (now known as Virginia State University). Upon the passing of his wife, he provided love and care for his four young children and reared them to become productive citizens. He was a strong advocate of family, education, and the Bible.
In addition to church and civic affiliations, William received a Service Award from Allied Chemical Corporation (Honeywell), and recognition from Adolph's Mens and Women Clothing during his 89 year Birthday Celebration. He was also affiliated with the Petersburg Chapters of the Moles and National Epicureans, Inc. William's personality was such that everyone was his friend. He always had time for conversation and advice.
William Goodwyn's extensive employment consisted of being an Oxygen Therapist at Old Petersburg General Hospital (now known as Southside Regional Medical Center), and an experienced technician at Allied Chemical Corporation (now known as Honeywell) Hopewell Plant from which he later retired. After retirement, William continued to work for the Greater Crater Agency on Aging as a volunteer and was a part-time employee at Adolph's Mens and Womens Clothing (Petersburg and Colonial Heights location), until his passing.
A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 15, 2006, at Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA.
