Eliza Jane Lofton married Jacob Lincoln, a cousin of President Abraham Lincoln, on 5 March 1857. They lived in Blue River, Harrison County, which is very near this cemetery. She was his second wife, and they had three daughters and one son who died as an infant. She appears to have died between the time of the third birth in 1864 and the 1870 Census.

There is some confusion about the wives of Jacob Lincoln. He married Martha T. Gibbs in 1839 and they had children born between 1840 and 1853. It is frequently claimed that Martha died in 1865 but that is not possible if he remarried Eliza Jane Lofton in 1857. I think therefore that Martha died between 1853 and 1857. There is a gap in Jacob's children between Joseph in 1853 and Matilda in 1859 which supports the idea of a remarriage.

There is also confusion about the birth date of daughter Matilda Lincoln. Her tombstone says that she was born in 1851 and would therefore have been the daughter of first wife Martha Gibbs. However the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Censuses give a birth date of 1857-1859 which would make her the daughter of Eliza Jane. On her 1882 marriage record, Jacob and Eliza were listed as her parents. It is significant that Eliza Jane's mother was named Matilda.

The other two daughters were Catherine/Katie Lincoln 1860-1930 who married Issac Walk in 1882 and Roseanna Lincoln 1864 - bef 1888 who married Eli Walk in 1882. Eliza Jane is listed as the mother of both on their marriage records. There are also references to a son Charley b/d 1862 who also would have been the son of Eliza Jane rather than Martha.

It is not certain that she is buried here, but her grave was not found elsewhere, and it is known that there are a number of unmarked graves in this family cemetery on her parents' farm. If not here, perhaps at the Blue River Church of Christ Cemetery in Depauw. Her husband and some of the children later moved to Missouri.
