Daniel was born in Ireland (possibly Cavan)son of John and Mary Carlton and emigrated to the USA before 1854. He married Margaret Hart on Nov 7, 1854 at St. Patrick's in Newark, NJ. They had 7 children. Around 1861, together with a cousin William, he changed the family name to "Carrolton." He was a Hatter by profession and in 1870 was living in the 7th Census Ward of Newark. At the time of his death in 1909 he was living with his wife in the "Little Sisters of the Poor" Home for the Aged, South 8th and Warren Streets, Newark, NJ.
