Charles Harper Newbold, 82, of Davidson, NC died December 29, 2010 of pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Lingle Chapel, Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Davidson, NC. Family will receive friends following the service in the Jetton Fellowship Hall. Graveside service will be private.
Harper was born July 14, 1928 in Wilmington, NC to the late Jeremiah McMullan Newbold and Jessie Harper Newbold. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1946, grew up in the First Presbyterian Church and served in the 82nd Airborne Division before entering Davidson College where he graduated in 1952. After graduation he served as an infantry officer from 1952 to 1954 in Korea. He retired from General Motors (GMAC) in 1988, following 34 years of service. After retirement he moved to Davidson and enjoyed living and serving in the college town of his alumnae. A Presbyterian all his life, he served as an elder at DCPC and as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher at other Presbyterian churches. Harper was a Christian, southern gentleman, husband, father, grandfather, brother, Lion and soldier. His children loved him for his unconditional love and support, his moral character, his sense of fairness, and his generosity.
Harper is survived by his loving wife Betty Sandifer Newbold (recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary), daughter Anne Newbold Dixon and husband Ed; son William Hunter Newbold and wife Linda, granddaughter Katherine Harper Dixon Toms and husband, David (from Cornwall, UK), granddaughter Charlotte S. Dixon, all of Charlotte. His son Charles Harper, Jr., preceded him in death in 1989. Also surviving are his siblings Caroline N. Swails, Anne N. Perkins both of Wilmington, NC, Rev. Dr. Jerry M. Newbold, Jr. and wife Pat of Black Mountain, NC, Jessie N. Kennedy and husband Rev. Dr. James Kennedy of Glasglow, VA and twin brother Dr. K. Raynor Newbold and wife Ellen of Rose Hill, NC.
In lieu flowers, memorial may be made to: The Sandifer-Newbold Nursing Scholarship at Queens University of Charlotte, Davidson College Presbyterian Church or Davidson College.
