The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Anne Marie Burke, 84, who died on Monday, May 4, 2015 at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth. She faithfully served the people of God as an SCL for 65 years.
Sister Anne Marie was born in Butte, Montana, on Nov. 3, 1930, the oldest child of four born to Alfred and Anne Driscoll Burke. Her father was born in Scotland; her Irish mother, in Butte. Anne Marie was baptized in Butte at Immaculate Conception Parish on Nov. 23, 1930. She said that growing up in Butte gave her a powerful sense of tradition and belonging. Anne Marie attended St. Joseph’s Grade School, Girl’s Central High School, and went to Saint Mary College in Leavenworth for a year before entering the Sisters of Charity in 1950. As Sister Mary Letitia, she pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1950. She later returned to the use of her baptismal name. Sister Anne Marie rounded out her education throughout her years in community, earning a BS in Elementary Education from Saint Mary College, a MA in Spanish from Notre Dame in 1970, and a MA in Religious Studies from St. Louis University in 1981.
After making vows, Sister Anne Marie taught 11 years in various elementary schools, mostly in the Midwest. When the community invited SCLs to go to Peru in the mid 1960’s, Sister Anne Marie volunteered, but ended up teaching Spanish at Bishop Ward High School in KCK for 15 years. In 1979, her father became ill and she returned to Montana where she transitioned from teaching to parish work, beginning in religious education and going on to be a Pastoral Assistant and then a Pastoral Administrator at Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Helena, Mont. From there she spent a year as Pastoral Administrator of St. Joseph Parish in Harlowton, seven years in the same position at St. Francis Parish in Valier, and four years at Our Lady of the Pines Parish in West Yellowstone, all in Mont. After a sabbatical, she served as a Pastoral Assistant at St. Ann’s Church in Palisade, Colorado. Later, she served as a ministry volunteer in Grand Junction, Colorado before retiring to the Mother House in 2009.
Sister Anne Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Sheila.
She is survived by her brother William M. (Carol) of Sachse, Texas, and her sister Kathleen (Frank) McOmber of Coal Valley, Illinois; extended family, friends, and her SCL community.
