Third of nine children born to William Armour from Scotland and Christina McCuaig of Lancaster, Ontario.

Catherine didn't marry until 1937, to widower Alexander Wardrope Greenshields Macalister. A.W.G. was an advocate and King's Counsel. Before that she enjoyed travelling to Europe and Jamaica while working as a registered nurse at the Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec City.

By 1937 Catherine had attained the position of Lady Superintendent of the Hospital.
