Richard Roy Nauman

Captain Richard Roy Nauman, US Air Force/US Army retired, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the age of 74.

A devoted husband of nearly 50 years, Dick is survived by his loving wife Genevieve, his four sons Richard, Michael, Joseph, and Philip, and his daughters-in- law Raina and Kathryn. He was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren and three step grandchildren. He is survived by four brothers and three sisters and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Leroy and his brother Larry.

Dick was born in Peoria, Illinois on March 13, 1941 and spent most of his childhood in Henry, Illinois. He graduated from High School in Pekin, Illinois in 1959. After high school he attended the University of Illinois and later was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force through the Aviation Cadet Training Program in Waco, Texas.

His family shared his pride in his 28 years of military service. Dick enjoyed the military life and it provided him opportunities to travel and explore the world. His assignments included duty in California, Maine, Indiana, Guam, Thailand, England, Spain, and Japan. He attended electronic warfare school at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California where he met his future wife. He served as an electronic warfare officer in B-52 and B-58 bomber aircraft, and as a navigator in KC-135 refueling tankers. Highlights of his military career included flying faster than twice the speed of sound and surviving an emergency ejection from a disabled B-58 on April 3, 1969. He earned three Air Medals flying combat missions in South East Asia and finished his career serving as a non-commissioned officer in the California Army National Guard.

In 1975, he moved with his family to the Curtis Park Neighborhood of Sacramento where he lived until his death.

In Sacramento, he worked for the County as a building inspector and an admin- istrator until illness forced his retirement in 1994.

In his spare time he enjoyed reading, travel, researching family history, camping with his family, and building model aircraft. His adventures included exploring much of the Western United States, and hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon three times. He had a great appreciation for world history and cultures and loved meeting people from all over the world. He volunteered for many years for the Sacramento Police Athletic League soccer club.

The family thanks the staff of Raley's Supermarket on Freeport Boulevard, Norm's Barber Shop, and Hana Tsubaki Restaurant for the kindness they showed Dick in his later years.

The staff at the ACC Care Center and Sutter General Hospital provided compassionate care in his last days.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 13, 4pm-8pm with a Rosary service at 6pm at Harry A. Nauman & Son Funeral Home, 4041 Freeport Blvd. Sacramento. Funeral mass will be Thursday May 14, 10am, at St Rose Catholic Church, 5961 Franklin Blvd, Sacramento.

Graveside service immediately following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 6700 21st Avenue, Sacramento.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to Sutter Medical Center Foundation - Samaritan Fund, Office of Philanthropy, 2700 Gateway Oaks Suite 2200, Sacramento, CA 95833.
