Ernie attended St. Edward High School, graduating about 1934. He served in the US Navy, achieving the rank of BMC (Chief Bosun's Mate).

Because of Ernie's service aboard the USS Tennessee during the attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 Dec 1941, he qualifies for interment at The Punchbowl, Honolulu, HA.

The family traveled to The Punchbowl for that interment, and cremation allowed for some of Ernie's ashes to be interred with his wife at St. Edward's cemetery, and some at Hawaii. His son Br. Benedict also held a ceremony for Ernie at the St. Benedict Priory, Still River, Mass.

[note: The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (informally known as Punchbowl Cemetery) is a national cemetery located at Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu, Hawaii. It serves as a memorial to honor those men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, and those who have given their lives in doing so.]
