Winifred F. Coonan, 75, of St. Augustine, Florida, and formerly of North Grafton, Massachusetts, passed away on May 11, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Winifred was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to James Fitzgibbons and Doris McElliott. She attended St. Peter High School in Worcester, where she earned a scholarship to attend St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing. Later, on she graduated from Anna Maria College with a bachelor's of nursing and eventually a master's in nursing from Anna Maria College.

Winifred was married to Daniel Coonan for the past 54 years. They lived in Grafton for 27 years, raised their three children and then moved to St. Augustine, Florida, in their later years. For over 40 years, Winifred was involved in taking care of the critical ill to the elderly in the nursing field. She worked as a registered nurse in correctional facilities, schools, hospices and also was a private-duty nurse. In addition to taking care of others in nursing, Winifred gave of herself throughout her life to the community and the church. She was president of the Grafton P.T.A., eucharistic minister of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, and president of the Private Duty Nursing Association of Worcester.

Winifred is survived by her three children: Barry Coonan and his wife, Donna, of North Grafton, Sean Coonan and his wife, Laurie, of Keller, Texas, and Tracey Costa and her husband, David, of North Grafton. She was a very doting grandmother to nine grandchildren and traveled the country to attend all of their major life events. She also leaves behind her siblings, Jack Fitzgibbons of Florida, James Fitzgibbons of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Dorothy Rocheford of Connecticut, and Rosemary Fitzgibbons of Leicester, Massachusetts.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Cathedral Basilica.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
The Coonan Family would like to thank the nurses and doctors in the MICU at Flagler Hospital for all of their support during this challenging time.
