Former Durango resident Roberta Sagesar died after a long battle with Hodgkin's disease Sunday, July 4, 2010, in Aztec. She was 88.
Known as "Bobbie," she was born to Asa and Lucy Bolls on Nov. 11, 1921, in Salisaw, Okla. She was one of 10 children, with five brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Sagesar grew up in Oklahoma and Missouri. She worked as a hostess and cocktail waitress in Denver for a while. In 1950, she married William Sagesar in Denver.
The Sagesar family moved to Durango in 1973, when Mr. Sagesar came to manage the new Tamarron Resort, which he did for 25 years. The couple was active socially in Durango, and the Sagesars were members of the Petroleum Club. Mrs. Sagesar volunteered quite a bit at Community Hospital. She was known as the "Scrabble Queen," her son, Hank, said.
A favorite story told by family and friends was when Mrs. Sagesar and several of her female friends had a "weird" party to decorate jock straps as gag gifts for their husbands. Mrs. Sagesar, who loved to laugh, gave one to actor Rock Hudson when he stayed at Tamarron during the filming of the movie "Avalanche." The Sagesars moved to Aztec about two years after Mr. Sagesar's retirement in 1998.
Mrs. Sagesar was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Soth.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Sagesar, of Aztec; son, Hank Sagesar, of Aztec; and one grandchild.
No services are planned.
