John was born July 9, 1918, in Springfield, Ill, the son of Arthur and Flora (Welham)Smith. He grew up and attended school in Springfield.
On Dec. 27, 1938, John married Esther Suitor in Springfield, Ill., where they lived for a short time. They then moved to Boyne City, where they have lived since.
John worked for Michigan Tannery and Extract for 27 years, and then went to work for Harbor Industries in Charlevoix for 11 years.
John was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He also served in the CC Camp for three years.
John attended the Free Methodist Church. In his spare time , he loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; five grandchildren, Suzy of Chicago, Jeff Smith and his wife, Crystal, of Walloon Lake, John Smith and his wife, Dana, of Flint, Darryl Hall of Freeland, and Tiffany Smith of Kingsley; and seven great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his son, Darryl Smith, in 1982.
