Before her marriage to James Ayers in 1909, Ina had given birth to Bert Shepard in 1908 as the result of a rape. Bert's father, Aretus P. Shepherd, was the first husband of Ina's sister, Elizabeth. Aretus was incarcerated for the rape. Aretus and Ina were never married.

Ina was committed to the Madison State Hospital for the Insane in 1915 where she was a patient for the last 40 years of her life. Following her death, her body was removed to the Indiana University Anatomical Board in Bloomington, Indiana.

Ina and James were the parents of Goldie Lois Ayers and Connor Ayers. Due to Ina's insanity, both of these children were transferred to an orphanage and given up for adoption.

Goldie was adopted by Samuel B. and Carrie Parsons. They renamed her Evelyn May Parsons.

Conner was adopted by Walter and Anna Willits. They renamed him Conner Willits.
