Lester DeVere Martin

Lester DeVere Martin, 93, of Albany passed away on Sunday at the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House.
Lester was born in Gaston to Francis B. and Hallie (Ross) Martin. He grew up in the Salem area and graduated from high school. He worked for Willamette Valley Lumber Co. in Dallas before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard a landing ship transport and was honorably discharged in December of 1945.
He married Irene M. Sylvia and they had a son, Alan R. Martin. They later divorced and he married Lorraine D. Atwood-Scovill on Friday, Oct. 17, 1952, in Springfield. She had three children from an earlier marriage. They lived in Glide before moving to the Albany area in 1964. In 1965 Lester opened Martin's Radiator Repair and ran the business until he retired and gave it to his son, Alan.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and retrofitting several different motor homes to accommodate his wife's disability. Lester was also a clever inventor of gadgets to make everyday tasks easier.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 10, and an avid pool player down at the senior center. He attended many L.S.T. reunions.
Lester is survived by daughters Gail L. Weade of Vancouver, Wash., and Sandra C. Otsyula of Eugene; sons David D. Scovill of Prescott, Ariz., and Dean A. Scovill of Austin, Texas; sister Delores Langman of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lorraine Martin; one brother, six sisters and son Alan R. Martin.
