Former Bayfield resident Juliah Ann Atkinson died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, in Las Vegas. She was 66. The cause of death was complications of an autoimmune disease, primary bilary cirrhosis of the liver.

Mrs. Atkinson was born to Howard and Ruth Wieners on March 25, 1947, in Pagosa Springs but spent most of her life in Independence, Mo. She graduated from Van Horn High School there in 1965.

In November 1965, she married Thomas J. Tobler Sr. The couple had two children together before the marriage ended in divorce.

In Kansas City, Mo., she worked for Lerner Co., First National Bank of Kansas City and American Century Investors.

In the mid-1970s, she married Robert L. Burnett. The couple had one child together before the marriage ended in divorce.

Mrs. Atkinson retired and moved to Bayfield in 2001 with her husband, John Atkinson, whom she married Dec. 4, 1988.

"But retirement didn't last long," according to her family.

She started a new career with Edward Jones Investments before going on to work for the 6th Judicial District Court of Colorado in Durango.

"After 10 years of living on the side of a mountain," according to her family, "she decided to be with her true love, her granddaughter. This time, she truly retired and enjoyed being a grandma."

The Atkinsons moved to Las Vegas in January 2012.

Mrs. Atkinson was a Sunday school teacher most of her adult life.

"She enjoyed sharing her love for the Lord, whether through teaching, music or missions," according to her family. "You never saw her without her Bible or a smile. She loved life because she was secure in it. She grew up in the church, and her final church home was Paradise Church of Las Vegas."

Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by her son Timothy Burnett.

She is survived by her mother, Ruth Wieners, of Kansas City; husband of 25 years, John Atkinson, of Las Vegas; son Troy Tobler of Las Vegas; daughter, Rhonda Tobler, of Kansas City; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., in Kansas City, Mo. A celebration of life will begin immediately afterward at 10 a.m. Friends and family are asked to wear bright colors or blue the day of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Juliah Atkinson Memorial Fund, Paradise Church of Las Vegas, 2525 Emerson Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89121; or www.liverfoundation.org.
