Bud graduated from Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, attended the University of Florida and served his country in the Army Air Corps. He was on his college teams for swimming and football. After college, he was an avid golfer and boater.

The call of "Hey Culligan Man" often echoed in the streets as his imposing figure passed through South Miami, generally walking and waving to his many friends and neighbors!
