Hilda Elaine Cordes, wonderful wife of Ronald L Cordes, went to be with her Savior on May 17, 2015 at the Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.

She was born on January 12, 1953 in Phenix City, Alabama to Irvine and Inez (Alexander) Rowland. Her early years were spent in Columbus, Georgia on a small farm with chickens, ducks, dogs, and fruit trees. At the age of 8, they moved to Governor Yeaman’s Apartments, Hanahan, South Carolina where she attended Fishburne Grade School and graduated from Hanahan High School in 1972. She attended Highland Park Baptist Church and the love of her life then was a Chihuahua/Russell Terrier mixed dog named Susie.

She graduated in 1976 from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology in 1976. To help pay for her college, she worked at Buchanan Volkswagen. She never bought a Volkswagen from them but was chauffeur for her elderly parents in their 1969 American Rambler.

In 1977, Elaine was working at Baker’s Hospital in downtown Charleston, where she coincidentally spent time as a patient having skin melanoma removed. During this time, God said it wasn’t good for Elaine to be alone so He brought a young sailor from South Dakota into her life. While she remained in the hospital longer than anticipated, a friendship developed which turned into love, culminating in marriage on November 4, 1978.

They attended Charleston Harbor Bible Church where they participated in Bible Studies and attended the Christian Serviceman Center. After their first 6 year enlistment, they left the Charleston area and moved to LaGrange, Wyoming from 1980 to 1983 where Ron went to Frontier School of the Bible. They then moved to his hometown of Rapid City, South Dakota where she worked for a couple of dentists.

Returning to Navy Service in 1985, as a good sailor’s wife, Elaine went wherever his duty station was (South Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut) until his retirement in September 2000. While Ron worked at Conseco Finance/Green Tree Servicing Company, Elaine worked for various Dentists, Jolly Lane Floral, Holiday Hills Retirement Community where she co-managed with her husband for a year, and lastly Uniform Center.

Elaine loved to cook, was an avid reader (mostly fiction and books pertaining to the South, dogs, England, and Scotland), and was quite the photographer having won white, red and blue ribbons for her wildlife and landscape pictures. She started a photography business, Captured in Time Photography, as a wedding photographer for several years. Though never finding a home church she was comfortable in, she enjoyed watching on television and reading literature by Pastors Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah, and Billy Graham.

In December 2014, Elaine suffered a stroke and was in and out of the hospital for heart problems when she learned she had metastatic renal cancer. Through the years, Elaine and Ron had 3 dogs that brought joy to the home: Mitzie, Sebastian, and Josephine (Josie).

She is survived by her husband, Ronald of Rapid City, sister Alice (Clarence) Allen of Hanahan, nieces Sherry (Curt) Snouffer of Rock Hill, SC, Valerie (Ted) Bouthiller of Moncks Corner, SC, Sandra Maher of Hanahan, and nephew Eric (Annette) Allen of Murfreesboro, TN as well as great nephews and great, great nieces, Thelma Cordes (mother-in-law), sister-in-law Ronda (Chuck) Bower, brother-in-laws Robert (Laura) Cordes, and Bill (Kathy) Cordes .

She was preceded in death by her parents and several good friends/dental assistants she knew in her life’s journey.
