Educated in public and private schools at Bellows Falls, Vermont. At 17, moved to Boston and worked in a wholesale dry-goods establishment. About 1840 he started a commission business in Boston, forming a partnership with a wholesale grocery house in Cleveland. In 1846 he became a partner in the provision business with his father-in-law, Jabez Fisher, the firm name being Fisher & Chapin, who were among the most extensive pork-packers in Ohio and Illinois. He was treasurer of the Eastern Railway, vice-president of the Massachusetts National Bank, Boston. Selectman of Brookline, MA from 1860 to 1863. Director for almost 25 years of the New England Mutual Insurance Company. Member of the NEHGS and life member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
