George Leis was the son of Henry Leis and Catherine Ana Leis. He was married to Lillian R. Ross Leis. He was the son-in-law of Edmund Gibson Ross, U.S. senator from Kansas and governor of New Mexico Territory. As senator, Edmund Gibson Ross cast the deciding vote that acquitted President Andrew Johnson during his impeachment trial.

George Leis is interred in the Mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery.
