SAN DIEGO, Cal., Nov. 6 (AP)—Colonel Richmond M. Schofield, 74, died Thursday at the naval hospital. Born in Richmond, Va., Colonel Schofield served as aide to his father, the late General John M. Schofield, when the latter was with the army.
Colonel Schofield had assignments in many parts of the country and Manila and Hawaii. The body will be sent to Portland, Or., after private services here.
Colonel Richmond M. Schofield began his military career in 1891 as a second lieutenant of the 5th cavalry, according to Major-General Charles H. Martin, ex-governor of Oregon.
“I recall him well, : said General Martin, “and his father, for whom Schofield barracks is named in Honolulu, was one of ablest soldiers this army ever saw. He was commanding general under President Grover Cleveland. Colonel Schofield married a Portland girl, Miss Gertrude Smith, daughter of a pioneer resident of this city.”
