Thomas Akin was the founder and President of the Laclede Steel Company. Laclede Steel, incorporated in 1911, was a manufacturer of carbon and alloy steel produced by one electric furnace, with a rated annual capacity of 550,000 tons. With mills in Alton and Vandalia, Illinois, and Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, the company's products included hot rolled bars, strip, plate and wire.
