Awarded the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds received on December 18, 1944, during the "Battle of the Bulge" during World War II, where he was serving as an anti-tank gunner with the 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division at Losheimergraben (Losheim Gap) at the border between Belgium and Germany. About an hour later, he was captured by forces of the German Wehrmacht, and was then held as a POW in Stalag XIII-C, Hammelburg, Bad Kissingen, Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany until liberated by U.S. Forces on about May 4, 1945.
