Stuart Anthony Shipley was born in Richmond, VA on February 6, 1923 and died May 21, 2015. He was a longtime resident of the Masonic Home of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Sarah Ellen Rauch Shipley, and a son, Stuart Gregory Shipley. He is survived by his son and daughter in law, grandson and granddaugher in law and his sister. Mr. Shipley served in the Atlantic during WWII in the Armed Guard on the merchant ship M.F. Elliott. In the Pacific, he served in RON 23 and RON 12 on PT boats 282 and 190. The PT Boats motto, "Wooden Boats, Men of Steel" became the lifelong motto of Mr. Shipley. After the war, he joined the United States Air Force and and retired as a Master Sergeant. Later he owned Shipley's Bicycle Shop with his sons. He was a charter member of Varina Masonic Lodge #272 AF&AM and was a mason for 62 years. In 2008, he received the "Perfect Ashler" award in recognition of his service to the craft. He was a member of Ft. Lee Baptist Church, as well as The Navy League, PT Boats, Inc., and the Air Force Sergeants Association. The family will receive friends at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond VA 23231, on May 26, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A Masonic service will be held at 7pm on the evening of the visitation. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Ln., Richmond VA 23231, on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 11am.
