Peter was the son of fellow Swiss immigrants Peter Burgener Sr. and Louisa Veihman. It was a second marriage for Peter. He had married first wife Barbara Grosman on 9 Nov 1843 in Stark Co., Ohio, and they had at least three children together—John (b.circa 1844), Elizabeth (1846-1926), and Catherine (b.circa 1849). I do not know Barbara’s fate, but circa 1856, Peter married Louisa. Peter and Louisa appear to have had ten children together—Lydia V. (1858-1939), Christian H. (1859-1930), Peter D. (1862-1936), Rose S. (1863-1948), Clara L. (b.circa 1865), Samuel J. (b.1867), Sarah A. (1869-1933), William (b.Dec 1871), Frederick Elias (1873-1952), and an unidentified daughter who died in her infancy.

Peter’s father and half-siblings appeared on the 1850 Census, living in Scott, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Peter Sr., aged 30, was an evangelical preacher. First-wife Barbara, aged 24, was home with their three children—John, aged 6 and born in Ohio, Elizabeth, aged 3 and born in Indiana, and Catherine, aged 1, also born in Indiana.

Circa 1856, Peter’s father married Peter’s mother Louisa. Their first child, daughter Lydia, arrived in 1858, and Louisa would have eight more children over the next fifteen years. I found the family on the 1860 Census, living in Part, St. Joseph Co., Michigan. Peter, aged 40, was still preaching. Louisa was home with their combined five children—Peter’s children John, aged 16, Elizabeth, aged 14, and Catherine, aged 12--and Peter and Louisa’s children—Lydia, aged 2, and Christian, aged 1.

By the 1870 Census, the family had moved to Plymouth’s West Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Peter Sr., aged 50, was trying his hand at farming. Louisa, aged 35, would have had her hands full at home with their children—Peter’s two daughters Elizabeth, aged 24, and Catherine, aged 22, and Peter’s and her children—Lydia, aged 12, Christian, aged 11, and noted incorrectly as a daughter named Christina, Peter, aged 8, Rose, aged 6, Clara, aged 5, Samuel, aged 3, and Sarah, aged 1.

The family was still living in Plymouth when the 1880 Census was enumerated. Peter Sr., aged 60, was still actively farming. Louisa, aged 45, was keeping house. Home with her were Catherine, aged 31, Lydia, aged 22, Christian, aged 20, Peter Jr., aged 18, Rose, aged 16, Clara, aged 15, Samuel, aged 13, Sarah, aged 11, William, aged 9, and Elias, aged 6. Also living with the family was Louisa’s 26-year-old brother George Veihman.

Eight years after that census, Peter Jr. married Margaret “Maggie” E. Garn on 12 Sep 1888 in Marshall Co., Indiana. On 12 Aug 1895, they welcomed daughter Theresa Leonore. They appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth. Peter, aged 38, was earning a living as a grocer. Margaret, aged 36, reported that she had only had one child. There with her parents that census year was 4-year-old Theresa.

By the 1910 Census, the family had relocated to Union Township, Elkhart Co., Indiana. Peter, aged 47, indicated that he was the proprietor of a grocery store. Margaret, aged 44, again reported that she had only had a single child, daughter Leonore, aged 14 by the census year.

Just before the next census was taken, Leonore married Fred Geible on 4 Jun 1919 in Elkhart Co., Indiana. Fred was the son of Fred Geibel Sr. and Mary Jane Schasfer.

The 1920 Census still had Peter and Margaret in Elkhart County. Peter, age 57, was busy with his grocery store. Margaret, aged 56, was tending their empty nest. Peter and Margaret’s daughter Leonore and son-in-law Fred were living in Wabash, Wabash Co., Indiana, where Fred was working as a metal worker in a motor truck factory.

Sadly, a year after that census, Margaret died at age 57 or 58. She would miss the birth of her three grandchildren--Harry F., born circa 1921, Merrell D., born circa 1923, and Freda E., born circa 1924. Sadly, it appears that Freda, named after her father, would never know her father, as he died in 1923 before she was born.

Leonore eventually remarried, exchanging vows with Everett Amber in 1927 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana, and they settled in South Bend, about forty miles to the northeast of Leonore’s father.

I looked for, but couldn’t find Peter on the 1930 Census. He died in 1936 at age 73 or 74, and was laid to rest next to Margaret here in Oak Hill.
