Obituary from Jay Chapel: "Hazel Dolores Adriani Sordi--- Isola Dolores Adriani was born on Elba Island, in Italy, on July 11th, 1912. She went to God on May 12th, 2007, leaving behind her life-long partner and husband, John Sordi, and a large and loving family who were gathered around her in love and prayer when she died.

Isola's family came to America from Italy when she was an infant. Her parents were Giovanni and Antonetta Adriani. Hazel had two older sisters: Yolanda and Toscana. At Ellis Island, Isola's name was changed to Hazel, and that is how she has been known these many years.

Hazel's family settled in Reedley, where her father worked at Rusconi Winery ranch. Hazel's mother did the cooking for the ranch employees and was known for her wonderful meals. Anyone who has been blessed to sit at John and Hazel's table and countless have done so, will tell you that Hazel inherited her mother's gift for food and hospitality.

The Adriani family moved to Fresno in 1916 and purchased a farm. In the next year Giovanni died in an accident. When Antonetta married Pete Pagnini, they moved with her children (now including a baby named John) and Pete's sons, Joe and Alfred, to Madera.

The newly formed Pagnini family moved one farm over from the Sordi family, where Hazel would meet her future husband. When John and Hazel first laid eyes upon one another they were six years old. They attended school together at Howard Elementary and never parted ways after that. Hazel and John were married in 1930, when they were both 18. They had three children: Marilyn, Laura, and Doug. Together they built a home, a family farming business, and a reputation for warmth and welcome.

Hazel was a life long member of St. Joachim Catholic Church and the Italian Catholic Federation of the parish, a long time member of the Italo-American Club and a life member of the Madera Historical Society. Many will remember when John and Hazel were crowned king and queen of Madera's Old Timers' Day.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, and a beloved grandmother, Hazel had many friends who loved her delicious meals and the great times of story-telling and laughter around their table. Her skills included knitting, sewing, and growing beautiful flowers. She was a hard worker and she knew how to have fun: dancing, meeting people, celebrating with family, and taking grand trips all over the world with John.

John and Hazel continued to live in their own home together, taking good care of one another, until Hazel's death. We will remember the laughter in her eyes when John would tease her, and the joy it was to be in the company of two people who loved, respected, and enjoyed one another in a marriage lasting nearly 77 years.

Hazel is survived by her husband, John, [2] daughter[s], ... and son, .... Hazel was called Grams and dearly loved by 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Hazel Sordi was a woman who was deeply loved. She was blessed by God in her life and even in her death, surrounded by loved ones who will forever love and remember her.
