Melvin was born and reared in Greensburg, Louisiana to Joe P. and Pearl Hunter Bryant. The family was large with a total of seven sons and three daughters born to Joe and Pearl.
He graduated from Greensburg High School prior to attending Southeastern Louisiana University.
Melvin had two other brothers that were enlisted to the military and stationed at Vietnam. His brother, Emmett had also been killed there and the other brother was wounded.
He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commandment Medal with oakleaf cluster, and the Commandment Infantry Badge.
Melvin and three other soldiers were washed away in rice paddies southwest of Binh Son.
