Howard Lee Becker was born to Jake and Julia Koehn Becker on December 30, 1949, at Moundridge, Kansas. He departed this life on August 23, 2009, at his home at Galva, Kansas. He reached the age of fifty-nine years.
Our father spent his childhood years living in the Galva, Kansas, community. Two years of 1-W service were spent at Denver, Colorado, two years living at Albuquerque, New Mexico, and most of his remaining life at the rural Galva home. As the days turned into years, the Savior, in love and mercy, kept knocking at his heart. When he was thirty-eight, he surrendered his life, repented of his sins and was baptized by Min. Herman Nightingale into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on January 17, 1988. We have precious memories of how Dad’s life changed and how happy we all were.
On November 29, 1968, he was married to Charlene Kay Dirks, officiated by Min. Paul Becker at Durham, Kansas. Through sunny days and stormy weather, they traveled life’s pathway for almost forty-one years. God blessed their home with one son and three daughters. He was called to the office of the deaconry, and Min. Darrell Becker ordained him on January 30, 1996. He was a man who could offer sound financial advice. He also served for years on the Gospel Tract Board. During the years of 2006-2009, he spent time in Ghana telling the story of salvation. Though the language was difficult, it did not hinder him from communicating and singing heartily with the people. He loved them, and they loved him.
Father was a heating and air-conditioning technician and master of most any job or thing that needed fixing. He had an innovative mind, ever dreaming of ways to improve whatever the need would be. If we had a problem, day or night, we’d “just call Dad!” He had a keen sense of responsibility and seemed to always love the challenge of hard work. Father was very hospitable, and many interesting people were invited into our home. His caring heart won him many friends as he sacrificed his time in helping them. He loved and entertained his grandchildren, much to their delight. A special springtime memory is the large bouquet of fragrant sweet rockets he would pick for his loving wife.
We, as the family, treasure the true values of life our father taught us. Attending worship services, reading God’s Word, and personal devotions were important to him. It was always his desire that we would all be saved. A paradox of his life was how he could instill courage and hope in others while, deep within, he succumbed to a strengthening cord of hopelessness that would at times leave him in deep despair. His tragic death has left our hearts broken and bleeding. We shall endeavor to leave our questions with the God of heaven, and by His grace, we commit our loved one to His mercy seat, which is in the hands of Jesus. We have been strengthened and comforted by the many prayers of our beloved brothers and sisters, both near and far.
Those left to cherish memories are his wife, Charlene, Galva, Kansas; son, Daniel and wife, Stephanie, Hardinsburg, Indiana; three daughters: Jodie and husband, Cristopher Ratzlaff; Karmita and husband, Ty Johnson, all of Galva, Kansas; and Keri and husband, Chad Johnson, Hardinsburg, Indiana; eleven grandchildren; his mother, Julia Becker, Moundridge, Kansas; two brothers, Milferd and wife, Stella, Halstead, Kansas, and Vernon and wife, Sharon, Galva, Kansas; one sister, Ruby and husband, Gene Goucher, Galva, Kansas; relatives and many friends.
His father and one nephew preceded him in death.
The funeral service was held in the Lone Tree Congregation, Galva, Kansas, on August 27, 2009. Officiating ministers were Roger Unruh, Cyrus Wedel, Gary Nightingale, and Maurice Wedel. The interment was in the church cemetery with Min. Stanley Johnson in charge.
