Sarah Alford Owens passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015. She was born in Manteo on February 19, 1937. Sarah is survived by her husband, Bobby Owens; her son, RV Owens III and wife, Julie; grandchildren, Shannon Owens, Bo Owens, Chase Hooper and Avery Hooper; son-in-law, Buddy Hooper; sisters, Dotty Fry, Sally Scarborough and husband, Phil and Della Basnight; brothers, Saint Basnight, Jr. and wife, Bea and Marc Basnight; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Shannon and husband, Lionel; nieces, Caroline Basnight, Vicki Basnight, Peaches Eckhardt, Claudia Harrington, Kathy Urich and Sarah Wise; nephews, Eddie Alford, Hannon Fry and Fields Scarborough; as well as many other cherished nieces, nephews, and family.
Sarah was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Owens Hooper; her brother, E J Alford; her sister-in-law, Sandy Basnight; and her parents, Cora Mae Basnight and Edwin Joseph Alford.
Sarah truly loved Dare County. She worked beside Aycock Brown in the early years to promote The Outer Banks and continued to greet hundreds of locals and tourists with her ready smile at Owens Restaurant. Sarah loved her hometown of Manteo and spent many hours driving its beautiful streets. She had a lifelong love of The Lost Colony and Dare County history. Dare County has lost one of its greatest historians with the passing of Sarah Owens.
A service will be held at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Manteo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, PO Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943.
