Elton Carol Brown passed away in League City on Monday, November 3, 2014. He was 94 years old. Elton was born on July 19, 1920, in Menard County, Texas to Carol Lane and Lurana Ellen Nixon Brown. He learned to ride a horse at a very early age and was an active member of the American Quarter Horse Association. In his early life, his riding and calf roping skills were what he used to earn extra money. Always an adventurer, he left home at age 18 and joined the CCC, a job program started by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and built roads in Arizona. A patriotic American, Elton joined the Merchant Marine in January of 1942 and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters during WWII. Elton remained in the Merchant Marine until 1991 when he retired and started farming and ranching full time. His favorite things to do were to ride horses, which he did until he was over 80 years old, and sit with friends and family, telling stories of all of the adventures he had during his life.
Elton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsie Roberts Brown, a daughter Carol Brown of League City, a son Craig and daughter in law Cheryl of Houston, grandsons Joseph of Miami Beach, Florida and Aaron of Seattle, Washington, and brother Robert Royce Brown and wife Joy of San Angelo, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carol and Lurana Brown, brothers Anson and Wilton, sisters Sadie Mae Walker Johnson, Alta Clark, Anita Brown and Ila Whanell Blackbourn Smith.
