Son of Samuel Scripture II and his 2nd wife Elizabeth (Lund) Spaulding Scripture. Samuel Scripture III, his older brother died in 1723 and was the son of Samuel II and his first wife Mary Pierce Green Scripture.


He married in Groton, Massachusetts on 09 Oct. 1755 to Mary Green, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Green of Groton. She was born there in Feb 1721.

He enlisted April 23, 1775, from the town of Mason, New Hampshire, for a period of eight months. He served as a Private in Captain Benjamin Mann's Company, Colonel James Reed's New Hampshire Regiment. Samuel took part in the Battle of Bunker Hill June 17, 1775. He again enlisted August 1778, as a Private in Captain Mann's Company. He answered the call to arms during the Ticonderoga Alarm, June 29, 1779; serving as a Private, in Captain Joseph Barrett's Company, Colonel Nichol's New Hampshire Militia Regiment. He may have served at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777. Samuel is listed in the 1790 Federal Census for New Hampshire as living in Cheshire County, Town of Packerfield.
