Roger Lee Johnson, age 70, was born February 6, 1945 and passed away peacefully May 26, 2015 at his home in Garland, Texas.
Roger was born in Eureka, Kansas the son of Clayton R. "Jack" and Violet S. (Hubbell) Johnson. He graduated from Eureka High School, where he lettered in both Football and Basketball. He described growing up in Eureka as a truly "Ozzie and Harriet" style childhood. He formed a high school band called The Shan-Dels and while attending the University of Kansas in the Lambda Chi Fraternity formed the popular Midwest band, "Eric and the Norsemen." The Norsemen were later inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Roger graduated from Emporia State University (formerly KSTC) where he received his bachelor's degree in education. He had a passionate love of music and Civil War history and was a 32 year member of various Living History/Reenactment groups. He was a leader who commanded at various levels throughout the 125th – 150th CW Anniversaries, retiring as a Brevet Major General. Roger served in US Army Reserves 18th Airborne Corps. He worked at Bank of America for 10 years until the time of his death. Faith in Jesus Christ and his salvation was an integral part of Roger's life. Roger was a faithful and active member of Lakeview Christian Church, where he served as an elder and was a part of the worship team.
Roger was preceded in death by his mother Violet, his father Clayton, his brother Larry and his sister Judy (Johnson) Young. Roger is survived by his wife Susan of 22 years, son Christopher Dorward, his wife Holly and granddaughter Emily, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and countless friends.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm on May 27, 2015 at New Hope Funeral Home, Sunnyvale, Texas. Services will be held at 11:00am, May 28, 2015 at Lakeview Christian Church, Garland, Texas, Pastor David White presiding. Graveside Funeral Service at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, KS at 11:00am Friday May, 29, 2015. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Lakeview Christian Church, 3307 Bobtown Road, Garland, TX 75043 in Roger Johnson’s name. Roger is loved and will be dearly missed.
