Chris Asanovic was born Nov. 20, 1946, in Portland, where he was raised by his family who had immigrated from Yugoslavia. He spent his early years in Southwest Portland near the family-owned Leaky Roof Tavern. The Asanovich family built a home and settled in Reedville when Chris was old enough to attend school. In 1965, Chris graduated from Hillsboro High School and joined the U.S. National Guard, training at Fort Polk, La. He served until being honorably discharged in 1971.Chris was a carpenter by trade and was proud of his contributions to many of Portland's high-rise buildings. He continued his love of carpentry throughout his life with smaller building projects and woodworking. But, it was in 1969 that he found his life's calling. Chris joined the Cornelius Fire Department as a volunteer and rose through the ranks during his distinguished 41-year career. After serving his final 20 years as chief, Chris retired in December of 2010, forever known as C8. Chris was dedicated to his community and he was instrumental in the creation and success of the annual Crab Feed in Cornelius that supported the Western Washington County Firefighters Association. When he allowed himself a break from the fire department, Chris found happiness bowling, car racing, fishing, crabbing, camping and boating with friends and family. As a young man, he played for the Leaky Roof Tavern's softball team as well as teams in the community and he raced derby cars. He was an avid Oregon Ducks football fan. Chris loved his family, friends and community.Chris passed away April 29, 2015, at his home in Cornelius. He leaves behind his children, Chris (Asanovic) Novak, Kim Asanovich, Troy Sandberg, Stan Asanovic, Amanda Schar and Brandy Franck; sisters, Sharon Asanovich, Susan Misner and Sandy Underwood; seven grandchildren; one great-grand- child; and a large extended family including his fellow First Responders. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Stan and Robert Asanovich. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Beaverton. He will be laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens, Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Western Washington County Firefighters Association.
