Dr. Boyce Joseph White, Jr. passed away today, May 29, 2015, at his home. The long time resident of Gadsden, AL lost his extended battle with cancer. He had already overcome huge health challenges over the years, and cheated death more than once. And although he fought courageously for his and had battle scars to show, this final blow from a common enemy for so many proved insurmountable. God called him home, giving his exhausted body its rest.
Boyce was born on August 25, 1944 in Oneonta, AL. Dr. White was born into an Army family which enabled him to see a lot of the world during his young years, living in places such as Alaska, The Panama Canal Zone, and Japan. As a boy, Boyce was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Star Scout, even climbing Mt Fuji in Japan as outing. During his high school years, he moved with his family to Opelika, AL, and graduated from Opelika High School holding the title of senior class president and as a member of the tennis team. That experience on the tennis team forged a life-long love of the sport and Dr. White became and avid observer and player. From Opelika High School he attended Auburn University as an undergraduate majoring in Pre-Med, and went on to UAB Medical School. He graduated from medical school in 1975, having specialized as an Ear, Nose, and Throat physician, adding cosmetic surgery to his credentials soon after. He began practicing in Birmingham, AL, but moved to Gadsden in 1979 to begin private practice. His patients were many and varied and Dr. White treated everyone with the same caring and expertise. In addition to being a doctor, Boyce spent a tenure in the National Guard while living in Birmingham. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gadsden, and was active for many years before he retired, which was in 2004. He and his wife, Arlene, then made Santa Rosa Beach, Florida their home for the past several years. In addition to playing tennis, he loved spending his free time traveling extensively, and greatly enjoyed the Gulf Coast and the mountains of North Carolina. He was a loving and generous family man, and was a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters. He has eight grandchildren from the ages of five to twenty-one, and one sister. These, as well as two step-daughters, many nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends will miss him greatly.
Dr. Boyce White impacted many lives on many levels and his memory will be long-lived. He embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm and had a pragmatic yet positive approach. He was always ready with advice, but never hesitated to ask for it, either. He lived his full life long enough to give his family and friends countless stories to remember, share, and be comforted by for many years. Though the Lord has seen fit to call him home, those he is leaving behind will feel his loss but treasure the memories of his presence until they meet again. He leaves behind a legacy for those who loved him, but especially to his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Pop". It is one rich with living life to its fullest, taking chances to make dreams come true, being authentic, and laughing often, which Boyce loved to do. Now we bid him farewell, but it is only a temporary parting. This world is not our home; we will see you again, our beloved.
Funeral services will be held at Lemley Funeral Home in Oneonta, AL, on Monday, June 1 at 10AM, followed by a graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery.
