Joe was born on July 25, 1922 in Tampa, FL to Mario and Anna Carastro. He was a veteran of WW11, serving with the US Armed Forces in the 103rd division. He held a mechanical engineering degree from Drexel Institute of Technology.
He ran his own hobby shop in Colorado and then worked for both Metco and GE before retiring in 1983.
He had many passions in life including photography, radio control models and bowling. He was an avid skier, being both an instructor and also on the Ski Patrol for the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics in 1960. He became a certified level 2 ski instructor with PSIA at age 76. His most ardent passion, however, was for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Joe is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jan, and children Stevee Steely (husband Wes), Karen Rocke (husband Ron), John Benedict (wife Kristi) and Judy Thuerk (husband Michael). He is also survived by 10 wonderful grandchildren, Scott, Drew, Taryn, Ryan, Allison, Jon, Luke, Grace, Addison, Michael and three nieces and a nephew.
Joe was predeceased by his first spouse of 35 years, Pamela Carastro and his sister Nancy Faget.
