Wingate was Director of Sports for the Baltimore News-Post, a nationally known sports writer and sporting judge. He was on his way to participate as a judge in the 1936 Olymic games in Berlin, when he was shot in the stomack accidentally at a shooting gallery on North Howard Street in Baltimore. He died a few hours after arrival at a hospital in Baltimore.
