Basil Arthur O'Neill, age 77 of Fresno, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2012. Basil was born on July 14, 1934, in the farming community of Navan, Ontario, Canada. He put down deep roots in the San Joaquin Valley after immigrating in 1951 with his twin brother, Bill, and his parents, Joseph and Irene O'Neill. Basil was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Matthew O'Neill; and his siblings: Joseph O'Neill, Evelyn Raymond, Kathryn Dorval Heffernan, Irene McCloskey, John "Jack" and William "Bill" O'Neill.

Basil attended San Joaquin Memorial High School before graduating Riverdale High School and attending California State University, Fresno. After graduation from Fresno State he served two years in the United States Army. Basil's long and rewarding career in agricultural finance and real estate saw him working primarily in Hanford and Fresno with Crocker National Bank, Production Credit Association, Producers Cotton Oil Company, and Western Ag Financial. Basil's business acumen was matched by his integrity and compassion.

On July 30, 1960, Basil married Marilyn Kutz, and, over the next fifty-two years, proved himself a caring husband and generous father. He is survived by Marilyn; his children, Joan and her husband, Stephen Johnson; Brendan and his wife, Laura; and Gregory; his much-loved grandchildren, Máiréad, Brendan and Cate Johnson, and Kristen, Allison and Matthew O'Neill; his sister-in-law, Verlee O'Neill, many other O'Neill relations, and a wide array of friends.

Basil's life was defined by his commitment to his family and his faith and his diverse interests. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Parish, Serra, and the Catholic Professional and Business Club, as well as a volunteer at Catholic Charities. A pole-vaulter and baseball pitcher in his youth, Basil remained an avid fan of Fresno State athletic teams, the Grizzlies, and the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. A dual citizen of Canada and the United States, he enjoyed vacationing with his family; a farmer at heart, Basil was known for his verdant vegetable and flower gardens. In retirement, he could be found reading, taking brisk walks with his dogs, or playing with his grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 355 East Champlain Drive Fresno, California 93730. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, also at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, followed by interment at 3:00 p.m. at Saint Peter Cemetery, 264 North Blythe Avenue, Fresno, California 93706.
