He was a Jamaican businessman and politician. He was the second of eight children of Joseph Gordon and Ann Rattray. He was a leading critic of colonial governor Edward Eyre and his execution was ordered by Eyre. His execution caused much reaction in Great Britain. On the one hundredth year of his death, he was proclaimed a National Hero of Jamaica. In the aftermath of the labor rebellion of 1938, Gordon came to be seen as a precursor of Jamaican nationalism. He was instrumental in the establishment of his own Native Baptist Church, of which Paul Bogle was a deacon. His portrait can be found on the Jamaican ten dollar note.
