Balis Ritchie was the son of Austin Ritchie and Rachel Everage. He married Abigail Hall, daughter of Johm H. Hall and Martha Pratt. They were the parents of 14 children:

Mr. Ritchie, 1869-1958 was the father of a large family, 14 children, the youngest of which was his daughter Jean Ritchie, nationally known popular folk singer and dulcimer player.
He was a remarkable man, making the majority of his farming tools himself, including his plow and hand tools. He managed to feed his family mostly from his land.
Mr. Ritchie's ancestors were the first Ritchies to settle in this area, immigrating from Scotland in 1768.
