The son of Adam Mylin & Mary (Helm) Kendig, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall, had dark hair and blue eyes, and never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 19, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry, rising to the rank of sergeant. He received a $450 bounty for enlisting, which he gave to his parents. He was killed in action "on the edge of the ditch" during the assault on Fort Fisher.

His first name was sometimes given as "Augustus."
