George was born in Greenville, Texas on September 16, 1924, the son of George O. Adkisson and Nancy D. Adkisson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elfriede M. Adkisson; and his sister, Elizabeth D. Adkisson of Quinlan.
He is survived by his children, George O. Adkisson III, Geoffrey H. Adkisson, Sam Axton, Leigh Nickerson and Gail Adkisson, all of Virginia; grandchildren and great grandchildren; his stepdaughter, Dr. Susan T. Paloczy of San Antonio.
George was commissioned as an Infantry 2LT in 1945. He served overseas in Germany, Japan, Korea and Vietnam as a parachute platoon leader, rifle company commander, mechanized battalion commander and airborne brigade commander.
He was also Senior Advisor with USMACV Advisory Team 3 in Hue, South Vietnam, during the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive of 1968 for which Team 3 received the Presidential Unit Citation (Army). Col. Adkisson also received the National Order of Vietnam and the Vietnamese Army Distinguished Service Order. Prior to retirement in 1974, he was Deputy Director for Missiles and Space in the Office of the Chief of Research and Development, Department of the Army and Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Fifth United States Army. Col.
Adkisson received a BS degree from the U. S. Military Academy and MSEE degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and was a graduate of the US Army Command & Staff College and the US Army War College.
During his career he was an Assistant Professor of Electricity at the Military Academy. After retirement, he was the Engineering Instructor at San Antonio College for fifteen years.
He was a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Audio Engineering Society, the Association of Graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, a Member of the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
His book “Unstable Stars, Gravitational Collapse, Black Holes” was published in 2002.
