EDELSTEIN — The death of a Henry man who had been operating heavy equipment Thursday morning on private property in rural Peoria County is under investigation.
The property owner at 922 W. County Line Road in Edelstein found the body of Edward R. Hartwig, 59, about 10 a.m. lying on the ground with a jackknifed truck and trailer on a nearby incline, according to Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll.
“The truck was still running,” Ingersoll said. “It is unknown whether he was struck or run over by the vehicle.”
Hartwig had an obvious head injury, but an autopsy scheduled for Friday should reveal any other injuries that contributed to the death, Ingersoll added.
Hartwig was pronounced dead at 11:28 a.m. Thursday at the scene, though it is not clear exactly when he died. The property owner said he was on the land but not in view of the area where Hartwig was working when the injury happened, Ingersoll said.
The property owner hired Hartwig, who lived at 1005 County Line Road 1150 N in Henry, to tear down a house and remove the basement of the structure on the Edelstein property, Ingersoll said.
An excavator was parked near where the body was found, and Hartwig may have been positioning the truck and trailer to load the equipment when he died, Ingersoll said.
