Jonathan was the son of Peter D. Valentine, b. 20 Oct, 1793 who was the son of Jonathan and Abigail (Day) Valentine.
His mother was Abigail Rutan, b. 19 Mar 1795, dau. of Hannah Baker and Joseph Rutan (b, 1769). His parents married 28 Nov 1812.
On July 25, 1838, Jonathan married Mary Littell, daughter of John Littell. Jonathan was a member of the Legislature in 1849-1850 and served as Justice of Peace.

Another respected Citizen has passed away. Hon. Jonathan Valentine died this morning from an attack of la grippe developing into pneumonia. Mr. Valentine was born in New Providence, N. J., Sept. 19, 1814. He was elected two terms to the new jersey legislature and served five years a probate judge of Union county, H. J. He came with his family to Kalamazoo in 1861 and soon after engaged in the grocery busines on east Main street. Some twelve years ago he retired from business and since he has been somewhat of an invalid. His wife died ten years ago. One son Samuel R. Valentin of New Providence, N. J., and three daughters living at home survive. Mr. Valentine was a gentle man of strict probity and honor, wide information and intelligence, rare kindness of heart and punctiliar courtesy. He was a consistent member of the North Presbyterian church.
