Howard J. Woodby, 85, of Kendallville died Thursday, June 22, 2017, at 4 a.m. in his residence.

He was born April 30, 1932, on a farm near Morenci, Michigan, to Clifford Woodby and Clara (Crozzier) Woodby-Nelson.

On January 10, 1953, in Morenci, Michigan, he married Joyce E. Keefer. She survives in Kendallville.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He worked for 11 years as a driver salesman for Bancroft Cleaners. He left there and farmed for several years. He then worked for Morenci Rubber Products in Morenci, Michigan, where he worked in the rubber lathe cut division and assembly operation. The assembly division moved to Butler in 1979, and he worked there until this division moved back to Morenci in 1983. The assembly division moved to Kendallville in 1986, and Howard retired from there in 1992.

After retiring, he worked in the lawn and garden department at Wal-Mart in Kendallville. He and his wife also worked for the Kendallville Police Department as school crossing guards for 19 years at the Kendallville Middle School.

Howard was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist and American Legion Post 86, both in Kendallville.

Howard was an avid hunter and enjoyed making wood crafts.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kathy (Jeff Meade) Kennedy of Fort Wayne; a son, Ronald (Gwen) Woodby of Kendallville; four grandchildren, Tammy (Mike) Gould, Todd (Sara) Soper, Jessie Maynard, and Jenny Maynard; six great-grandchildren, Alex Gould, MaKayla Gould, Tyelir Soper, Paisley Soper, Amya Howell, and Jaiden Littlejohn; a great great-granddaughter, Adalynn Slone; brother, Tom (Mildred) Woodby of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and a sister-in-law, Helen Woodby of Adrian, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Carrol, Gordon, and Richard Woodby; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Woodby, Alta Mae Woodby, and Patty Berlow; and his stepmother, Laverne (Sallows) Woodby.

Funeral services will be Sunday, June 25, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Chris Stephens of Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Morenci, Michigan.

Calling is Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Trinity Church United Methodist or Parkview Noble Home Health and Hospice.
