ATLANTA, Texas—Thurman D. Jones, 89, of Bivins, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, in a local hospital.

Mr. Jones was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Cass County, Texas. He was a teacher in Tennessee, a member of Bethsaida “Y” Baptist Church, a World War ll Army veteran and P.O.W. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Jean Chapman Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya Mitchell Jones of Atlanta; three daughters, Elizabeth Cleek of Wisconsin, Mari Pence of Lafayette, Ga., and Sherri Jones of North Carolina; three stepchildren, Keshawn, Keairen and Hope; two brothers, Joe Paul Jones of Gladewater, Texas, and George Jones of Bivins; two sisters, Durece Kirby of Denton, Texas, and Nancy Davidson of Queen City, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hanner Funeral Service. Burial with military honors will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Winchester, Tenn.

Visitation will be noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Thurman D. Jones, age 89, of Bivins, Texas died Sunday, January 26, 2014 in a Atlanta, Texas hospital.

Thurman was born January 21, 1925 in Cass County, Texas. He was married to his beautiful and loving wife Tonya Mitchell Jones. He was a World War II P.O.W and M.I.A. Army Veteran, and was also a teacher of 30 years in Tennessee. He was also a member of Bethsaida “Y” Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Edna Jones; three brothers, Billy Jones, Allan Jones, and Jimmy Jones; one sister and brother in law, Maxine and Jack Karr, and former wife to his three beautiful daughters, Loretta Jean Chapman Jones.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of one year and loving friend of seven years, Tonya Mitchell Jones of Atlanta, Texas; three daughters, Elizabeth Cleek of Wisconsin, Mari Pence and husband Johnathan of Lafayette, Georgia, Sherri Jones of North Carolina; three step-children, Keshawn, Keairen, and Hope; eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, five nieces, five nephews; two brothers, Joe Paul Jones of Gladewater, Texas, George Jones of Bivins, Texas; two sisters, Durece Kirby of Denton, Texas, Nancy Davidson of Queen City, Texas and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 2, 2014 in the Moore-Cortner Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens, Winchester, Tennessee. Visitation with the family will be held Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday evening from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 First Ave. NW, Winchester.
