Kalief Browder was a young man living in New York when he was arrested for robbery and sent to Riker's Island in 2010. Once there, he spend three years waiting for a trial, including two years in solitary confinement. He maintained throughout the entire time that he did not commit the robbery for which he was imprisoned. During that time he had attempted suicide several times. After his release from prison in 2013, he had a number of stays in the hospital for psychiatric problems.

Kalief became nationally well-known after a New Yorker story was published about his sojourn at Riker's and the brutal treatment he and other inmates received at the hands of the guards. Following the publication of the story, he met with several well known celebrities and was able to enroll in a local community college due to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Sadly, Kalief committed suicide by hanging himself in late May of 2015.
